General Information
Sporanox is an oral anti-fungal drug. It does not have an steroidal properties.
Theoretically, Sporanox is effective in reducing the fungal load in the sinuses and therefore it should help patients with allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS). We are comparing its effectiveness against standard medication (Prednisone) in the treatment of AFS. However, at this point in time, Sporanox is still unproven treatment for AFS.
Sporanox has been used extensively in the treatment of other fungal diseases (e.g fungal lung and skin infections) and has been found to be very safe.
Side Effects
In very rare cases, Sporanox may have the following adverse side effects:
Very rarely, in can impair liver function. Therefore only patients with normal liver function tests are started on Sporanox and liver function is monitored monthly. The liver impairment is reversible once Sporanox is stopped.
Sporanox is also contraindicated in patients with cardiac failure or a history of cardiac failure.
Interference
Sporanox may interfere with the action of the following classes of drugs:
- Antiarrhythmics
- Benzodiazepines (e.g Valium, Dormicum)
- Cholesterol medications
- Cisapride
- Calcium channel blockers
